What is Respondus LockDown Browser?
Software that students use to securely take an exam or quiz. The test taker cannot open a new tab, print, or search while taking an exam using Respondus LockDown Browser. Students download the LockDown Browser software, launch it and then login to access Canvas and take the exam.

What is Respondus Monitor?
Respondus Monitor is an online proctoring extension of Lockdown Browser that was used at WSU before Fall 2021. It is no longer available at WSU and will not be required in any WSU courses.

Am I required to use the Lockdown Browser for all online exams?
Your teacher determines if the Lockdown Browser is required. If enabled for an exam, students must use the Lockdown Browser to access and submit the exam.

What type of computer do I need to install Respondus Lockdown Browser?
Respondus Lockdown Browser is compatible with the following devices:

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Chromebook

A recent update allows some exams to be taken with a Chromebook. You can find information about using Lockdown Browser with a chromebook at support.respondus.com.

Can I use Respondus Browser on my phone or tablet?
Respondus Lockdown Browser is not supported on Android devices. The instructor can choose to enable access on iPads.

I need to take an exam with Respondus Browser and my device cannot use Respondus. What can I do?
Respondus Lockdown Browser is available on the Undergraduate Library computers. You must follow safety protocols and make an advance reservation to use the computers. Details are available at guides.lib.wayne.edu/c.php?g=1060942&p=7733299.

I downloaded Respondus Lockdown Browser/Monitor at another school. Can I use it at WSU?
No. Each version of Respondus Lockdown Browser/Monitor is designed specifically for a single institution. If Lockdown Browser or Monitor is required for your exams, you must download and install the WSU version. You may have multiple versions installed on your computer if you are enrolled at another institution.

How do I get support for Lockdown Browser/Monitor as a student?

How do I download the Respondus LockDown Browser software for Windows or macOS?

  • Log in to Canvas at canvas.wayne.eduwith your AccessID and password.
  • On the Global Navigation Panel, click Help and then click Students: Links and Downloads.
  • Scroll down to Downloads and click Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor.
  • This will navigate you to respondus.com. Carefully read over the License Agreement and click Install Now.
  • The LockDown Browser icon will appear on your desktop.

When taking an exam, students will click on the LockDown Browser icon to log in to Canvas and take an exam.

How do I download the Respondus LockDown Browser software for Chromebook?
Note: If you have previously installed any version of Respondus Lockdown Browser on your Chromebook, we recommend removing it and clearing your cache and cookies before following these directions. Also, please make sure your Chromebook is always updated to the latest version available.

  • Log in to Canvas at canvas.wayne.eduwith your AccessID and password.
  • On the Global Navigation Panel, click Help and then click Students: Links and Downloads.
  • Scroll down to Downloads and click Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor.
  • On the next page, follow the prompts to complete the installation.
  • Navigate to an exam in Canvas that requires Lockdown Browser.
  • Click Start Quiz to launch Lockdown Browser and begin the exam.

I installed the software and then attempted to take the exam. I received the error, ' Respondus Lockdown Browser Required. ' How do I resolve the issue?
Please log out of Canvas and then clear your cookies and cache. You can find instructions at
