What are computer operating system updates? Why do I need them?

Apple and Microsoft frequently release updates for their Operating Systems. You must keep your computer current with these updates to protect against vulnerabilities. Many viruses and worms spread rapidly because this essential task is postponed, putting your data at risk.

NOTE, operating system updates are automatically installed on computers that are managed by the C&IT DeskTech team. You may have to restart the PC afterwards. Learn more in kb.wayne.edu/684 .

Windows 8.1, 10

• Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
• Windows 10 Updates require a restart. You can schedule a Restart Time that is convenient for you by following these steps.

Note that Windows XP, Vista, and 7 are no longer supported by Microsoft. If your computer uses one of these operating systems, C&IT strongly recommends upgrading your operating system as soon as possible.

macOS

• Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Software Update to check for updates. If any updates are available, click the Update Now button to install them.
  

Note that Apple is no longer releasing updates before OS X El Capitan. If you are using an earlier version of macOS, C&IT strongly recommends upgrading your operating system as soon as possible.

Chromebook

• When your Chromebook downloads a software update, you will get an Update available notification. Select Restart to Update.
• At some point, your Chromebook will no longer be eligible for software updates. To find out when your Chromebook will stop receiving updates, follow these steps.
