What is it?

The Sun Learning Connection is an educational service offered through the Sun Academic Initiative, an international program designed to create a collaborative relationship between Sun Microsystems and academic institutions. Wayne State University is a member of this program.

The Sun Academic Initiative provides its members with free unlimited access to Sun technology courses and professional development courses from NETg through the Sun Learning Connection on the Web. Courses delivered through this program will introduce you to Sun Microsystems technologies, prepare you for industry-leading certification, and equip you with marketable IT and business management job skills.

The self-paced online training courses available through this program cover such topics as: Java technology, Unix system administration (Solaris and Linux), network management and security, Web services and publishing, Sun ONE infrastructure products, the StarOffice productivity suite, and professional development courses from NETg.

Who can use it?

Wayne State University students, faculty, and staff — full-time or part-time — can take an online course through the Sun Learning Connection (see How do I access the Sun Learning Connection? below).

What do I need to use it?

System and browser requirements for accessing and using Sun's Learning Management System are available from the login page at https://learningconnection.sun.com/.

Is there a cost?

There is no cost for accessing the Sun Learning Connection and taking a Web-based course. These educational services are free under Wayne State University's membership in the Sun Academic Initiative.

How do I access the Sun Learning Connection?

To access and use Sun Microsystem's online Learning System, you first need to authenticate yourself as a Wayne State student, faculty or staff member, using your WSU AccessID and password. After you are certified, the WSU "Company Name" and " Company ID" will be sent to your WSU AccessID e-mail address.

Once you have the required WSU information, you can follow the Registration Instructions and start taking an online course.

Where can I get help?

If you need help with meeting the system and browser requirements, check with the tech support staff in your school or department, or contact the Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) Help Desk by phone at (313) 577-4778, Monday–Friday, or e-mail helpdesk@wayne.edu.

Technical support for using the Sun Learning Connection is available directly from Sun Microsystems via e-mail. Once in the system, click the Contact Us link along the bottom of any Web page. In addition, you can access a "Learner User Guide" and "Frequently Asked Questions", as well as participate in a number of "Sun Communities": click the REFERENCE icon along the top and then the ARTICLES tab.
