WSU Proxy Server Setup for a Computer Running Windows with a Phone Modem Connection

Note: Because the proxy server checks each new connection, it tends to slow down Web browsing. For faster connections, turn off the proxy server when you are not using a resource that is limited to Wayne State users.

Turning on the proxy server

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Pull down the Tools menu and click Internet Options to display the Internet Properties window shown below.
  3. Click the Connections tab.
  4. In the Dial-up settings section, click the icon for the Internet service provider that you are using and then click Settings...
  5. A Settings window displays. Change your settings as described below.
  6. If the Automatically detect settings check box is selected, click to clear it, and make note that you cleared this box.
  7. If the Use automatic configuration script check box is selected, click to clear it, and make note that you cleared this box. (Note that the Automatic configuration address box will appear dimmed.)
  8. Click to select the Use a proxy server check box.
  9. Fill in the Address and Port boxes as shown below.

    Address proxy.wayne.edu Port 8080

  10. In the Dial-up settings section, check to ensure that your User name and Password are already specified. This information is obtained when you connect to dial-up networking.
  11. Click OK to close the Settings panel.
  12. Click OK to close the Internet Options panel.

Authenticating yourself as part of WSU

You will be prompted for your user name and password when you open Internet Explorer and when you first attempt to use a resource that is only for Wayne State use.

  1. Fill in the information requested:

User Name Type your WSU AccessID (e.g., xy6789)
Password Type the password for your WSU AccessID

  2. Click OK.

Using your browser

Use Internet Explorer as you normally would to browse the Web. You shouldn't have any problems accessing Web sites, including those sites that are limited to Wayne State users. However, you may notice slightly slower performance. This is normal because all of your requests are routed through the proxy server on their way to and from your browser.
