How to set up and connect to WSU-SECURE using Windows Vista

Following are instructions for setting up a secure wireless connection on the wireless@wayne network, using the WSU-SECURE SSID. (An SSID is the public name for a wireless network.)

Many steps are listed on this page, but the process only takes a few minutes and you only have to set up the WSU-SECURE connection one time.

Before you begin, please check the following:

Download and install security certificate

  1. Connect to the WSU SSID. (You need to do this in order to download the security certificate in the next step.)
  2. Open Internet Explorer and go to: https://nagios.cc.wayne.edu/ca.der.
  3. A Security Certificate dialog box opens.

    Click Open.
  1. An Internet Explorer Security dialog box opens.

    Click Allow.
  1. A Certificate window opens.

    Click Install Certificate….
  1. A Certificate Import Wizard opens.

    Click Next >.
  1. Click Next >.
  1. To complete the wizard, and import the certificate, click Finish.
  1. Click OK.
  2. To close the Certificate window, click OK

Configure your WSU-SECURE wireless network

Create a new connection

  1. Click the Start menu, and navigate to Connect To.
  1. A Connect to a network window opens.

    In the bottom-left corner, click Set up a connection or network.

    Click Next.
  1. Select Manually connect to a wireless network.

    Click Next.
  1. Manually connect to the WSU-SECURE wireless network, as follows.

    1. In the Network name field, type: WSU-SECURE.
    2. From the Security type drop-down menu, select WPA2-Enterprise.
    3. From the Encryption type drop-down menu, select AES.
    4. Leave the Security Key/Passphrase field blank.
    5. Check Start this connection automatically.
    6. Click Next.
  1. Click Change connection settings.
  1. A WSU-SECURE Wireless Network properties window opens.

    1. Click the Security tab.
    2. From the Security type drop-down menu, select WPA2-Enterprise.
    3. From the Encryption type drop-down menu, select AES.
    4. From the Choose a network authentication method drop-down menu, select Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP).
    5. Make sure Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network is checked.
    6. Click Settings….
  1. A Protected EAP Properties window opens.

    1. Uncheck Validate server certificate.
    2. Next to the Select Authentication Method drop-down menu, click the Configure… button.
  1. In the dialog box that opens, uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).

    Click OK.

Connect to WSU-SECURE

You can connect to WSU-SECURE two different ways, and you should only have to connect once.
  1. Open the Start menu and navigate to Connect To.
  2. A Connect to a network window opens. Click Enter/select additional log on information.

OR

  • In the lower-right corner of your screen in the notifcation area, click the Wireless Network Connection icon.


  1. An Enter Credentials window displays:

    1. For User name, type in your WSU AccessID, e.g. xy6789, and corresponding password.
    2. Leave the Logon domain field blank.
    3. Click OK to connect to WSU-SECURE.
Note: WSU-SECURE automatically connects when you are near an access point (AP) that supports it.
  • If you cannot connect to the secure network, you are not by an AP that supports WSU-SECURE.
  • If you are near a WSU AP, you can use that connection method.
