How to set up and connect to WSU-SECURE using Mac OS X 10.5

Following are instructions for setting up a secure wireless connection on the wireless@wayne network, using the WSU-SECURE SSID. (An SSID is the public name for a wireless network.)

Many steps are listed on this page, but the process only takes a few minutes and you only have to set up the WSU-SECURE connection one time.

Before you begin, please check the following:

Download and install security certificate

  1. Connect to the WSU wireless network. (You need to do this in order to download the security certificate in the next step.)
  2. Open Safari. Go to: https://nagios.cc.wayne.edu/ca.der.

A Security Certificate file downloads and opens.
  3. Save the file to your desktop.
  1. Double click the ca.der Security Certificate and it opens in Keychain Access (as shown on right).
  2. From the Keychain drop-down menu, select login, and click OK.
  1. You are asked: Do you want your computer to trust certificates signed by "Wayne State University" from now on?

    Click Always Trust.
  1. Quit Keychain Access.

    1. Click the 802.1X tab.
    2. In the bottom-left corner of the window, click the plus (+) sign.
    3. Select Add User Profile.
    4. For the Wireless Network name, type in:
      WSU-SECURE.
    5. For User Name, type in your WSU AccessID, e.g. xy6789, and corresponding password.
    6. From the Wireless Network drop-down menu, select: WSU-SECURE.
    7. Click OK.

Connect to WSU-SECURE

  1. In the bottom-right corner of the Network window, click Apply to save the information you entered in the steps above.
  2. From the Network Name dropdown menu, choose "WSU-SECURE" to connect to the wireless network.
  3. Close the Network window.

You are now connected to WSU-SECURE.
Note: WSU-SECURE automatically connects when you are near an access point (AP) that supports it.
  • If you cannot connect to the secure network, you are not by an AP that supports WSU-SECURE.
  • If you are near a WSU AP, you can use that connection method.

Check APs by building.
