About a Full Systems Test
of the
WSU Broadcast Messaging Service
- What is the purpose of a full systems test?
The purpose of conducting a full test of WSU's Broadcast Messaging Service is to ensure that the emergency notification part of the system is capable of functioning properly in times of emergency and that the university's networks can handle, in a timely manner, the high volume of traffic that this service generates when sending an emergency message.
- How did you choose the date for the test?
It is important that the systems test be conducted in a realistic scenario when the campus infrastructure is handling its normal volume of daily telephone and e-mail traffic.
- How might the test affect regular campus operations?
Those responsible for Wayne State's telecommunications, databases, and computer network systems will be actively monitoring all systems. In the event that issues arise, adjustments will be made so regular operations may proceed. WSU students, faculty, and staff may experience some slower response times when using the WSU E-mail System during the test.
- What should I do if I get a test message?
Don't be alarmed. Remain calm. The test message will indicate that it is just that -- a test message. You'll help us by following any directions, which may ask you to participate in a survey or confirm receipt of the test message.
- How will I know the difference between a test message and a real emergency alert?
The text of any test message will clearly indicate the message is part of a test.
- How will the messages be sent?
Everyone who has a WSU AccessID will receive a WSU E-mail message during a test of the emergency notification portion of WSU's Broadcast Messaging Service. If you set your message preferences to receive Emergency messages as a text message and/or a WSU instant message, you also will receive a test message through one or both of these communication channels.
- How can I get more information about WSU Messaging Services?

Thanks to the University of California, Davis Online Help System for the concept of using a question and answer format for providing information about their emergency notification system and testing procedures.
