Accessing the Internet on and off campus
Wayne State students, faculty and staff can access the Internet and Wayne
State's network from various locations and in numerous ways:
- Libraries and computer
labs on campus: Students, faculty, and staff can use
a computer in any University library on the main and Medical School campus
(with an AccessID and password), in a computer lab located in many schools,
colleges, and academic departments on campus, or at a WSU extension center
in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties.
- WSU Offices:
A faculty member or employee can connect a computer to the network in most
campus offices using a hard-wired Ethernet connection (data jack in the telphone
wallplate).
- Wireless Internet and
wired
access for laptops on campus: Students, faculty and
staff can use a laptop/notebook computer in the location of wireless
Internet access points in most buildings on campus or plugged in to a
wired network connection in libraries and popular gathering places.
- WSU Residence Halls
and Apartments:
Students have free high-speed Internet access for use with a personally owned
computer in their university residence hall or apartment on campus.
- From your home: Students,
faculty and staff can use a home computer connected to cable modem/broadband
Internet service, DSL telephone service, wireless broadband services (in
selected areas), or a telephone line modem with dial-in service provided
by a commercial Internet Service Provider.
- Away from home or when traveling:
- Local libraries
- Internet cafes, or using a laptop/notebook computer in a coffee shop,
bookstore, or other public establishment
- Many hotels and motels offer free or low-cost Internet access.
- Wired or wireless access in select areas

- An 800 or local access number that some Internet Service Providers offer
to their subscribers
- Prepaid Internet calling card
- for more about this service or to find a service provider, do a Web search
for prepaid Internet service.
WSU employees, including graduate assistants, also have direct access to restricted
resources on Wayne State's network through the Virtual
Private Network (VPN). VPN uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol,
which provides secure communications on the Internet and is found in standard
Web browsers. Using the SSL VPN, a computer effectively and securely becomes
part of the Wayne State University network—regardless of its location.
WSU faculty, researchers, and graduate students also can access and run applications
on Internet2, which develops and deploys advanced network applications and
technologies for research and higher education. For more information, visit
