You may have heard in recent news that Microsoft is releasing a new
Web browser, Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7). We have put together some questions
that hopefully address some of your concerns.
The information on this page is for windows-based home computers, and focuses
on how Internet Explorer 7 will affect access to WSU applications. For windows-based
computers in WSU offices, contact your local
tech support person.

- Yes, our preliminary testing has shown that using Internet Explorer 7 will
not affect your ability to access these applications. We are continuing to
test Pipeline, Blackboard, and WebMail. If you experience problems, contact

- Yes, Internet Explorer 7 will be delivered through Windows Automatic Updates as early as November 1 if:
Q – Can I download Internet Explorer 7 instead of installing it through Automatic Updates?
- Yes, you can get Internet Explorer 7 at: Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 download page.
Q – How will I know that Windows Automatic Updates is ready to install Internet Explorer 7?
- Microsoft has set up a blog (weblog) with information about Internet Explorer 7 and it includes the
Installation Experience Screenshots.
Q – Is there anything I need to do before installing Internet Explorer 7?
- Yes, you must disable any Antivirus and Spyware programs you have installed so that the improved IE 7 security features can be installed properly. After the install has completed, make sure that you enable these programs again. If you're not sure how to disable these programs, call
the C&IT Help Desk at (313) 577-4778.
Q – What about other programs I like to use, such as iTunes, or online banking, will they work?
- There isn't sufficient data to say one way or the other. Our testing has
been focused on WSU-specific applications such as Pipeline, Blackboard, and
WSU WebMail. In short, Internet Explorer 7 may cause some unexpected effects
to these programs. If you are concerned, check with the program vendor or
their Website for information
Q – What if I don't want to install Internet Explorer 7 on my computer?
- You will not be forced to install Internet Explorer 7. Even though it's being delivered via Automatic Updates you are given a choice before the actual installation takes place. The following text is from the Internet Explorer 7 blog maintained by Microsoft:
- "Of course we want to make sure you are ready to upgrade, so AU (Automatic Updates) will notify you when IE7 is ready to install by presenting a welcome screen. You can choose whether or not to install it; IE7 will not install without your consent". Read more about this point.
Q – How do I remove Internet Explorer 7 from my
computer if after the upgrade I'm having problems?
- To remove Internet Explorer 7:
- Click Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Progams.
- At the top of this window, make sure to check the Show Updates box.
- A list of installed programs are displayed. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7.
- Click the remove button.
