WSU AccessID: What is it? How do I use it?

The WSU AccessID is a unique identification code assigned to each WSU applicant/student and new faculty and staff person. It is the key to accessing computing services and resources at Wayne State — such as WSU Pipeline, WSU E-mail, the Blackboard Learning System, or WSU administrative systems.

No one (other than you) can use your AccessID unless you tell someone your password.

If you don't know your WSU AccessID, you'll find it on your WSU OneCard (the WSU picture ID). The AccessID is the two-letter, four-digit code (e.g., xy6789). You also can find your AccessID by searching for your name in WSU's Online Directory. If you can't find it in either of those places, contact the C&IT Help Desk by phone (313) 577-4778 or using the Contact Us form.

About the AccessID …

WSU Pipeline: Where do I go to get class lists, enter final grades, view personal info?

WSU Pipeline, at pipeline.wayne.edu, is the one-stop location for most of your online computing needs at Wayne State. You'll use it to get class lists, enter final grades, access calendars and conferencing, check your vacation banks, check benefits, fill out your timesheet, view personal info, get to WSU E-mail, and much more.

In order to login to Pipeline, you need an active WSU AccessID, a computer with Internet access, and a recent version of a Web browser that supports Internet standards, such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari (see the C&IT Help Desk list of supported software for browser software).

About WSU Pipeline …

Where can I find out more about Web Time Entry (electronic timesheets)?

Web Time Entry (WTE) is the electronic timesheet WSU full and part time faculty and staff use to report time worked.

The WTE timesheet is located in WSU Pipeline under the Employee tab. Go to the Employee Self-Service section on the left and click the Time Sheet link.

Detailed information about Web Time Entry is in the WSU Knowledgebase.

Blackboard: I need to use it for my class. What is it? How do I access it?

Blackboard is the Web-based course management system that Wayne State uses for classwork and for communications between faculty and students. All courses in Blackboard are password protected. To use Blackboard, you need your WSU AccessID and password.

You can get to Blackboard from WSU Pipeline or by going directly to blackboard.wayne.edu to log in.

About Blackboard …

Technology Resource Center: What is it? Can I get help with online and classroom instruction there?

The Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL), Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) and the University Libraries join forces at the Technology Resource Center (TRC) to provide faculty with comprehensive state-of-the-art resources to support online and classroom instruction at WSU. The TRC is located on the first floor of Purdy/Kresge Library.

The TRC houses:

WSU E-mail: Someone told me I had to use it. What is it? Where do I access it? Why do I need to use it?

WSU provides its faculty with an e-mail account with 30MB of storage and the ability to send and receive attachments that are up to 30MB in size. The e-mail address is in the form accessid@wayne.edu (e.g., xy6789@wayne.edu). You can work with your e-mail on the Web from WSU Pipeline or WSU WebMail, or you can download it and use e-mail software.

It's important that you use your WSU E-mail or set it so that e-mail sent to it forwards to your preferred e-mail address because your students may use your WSU E-mail address if they need to contact you. Another reason to use your WSU E-mail is that you have a listing in the WSU Online Directory that includes your name and e-mail address. Your colleagues may find you there and send you e-mail.

Also, when setting up your e-mail, don't forget to set your name so messages coming from you have an identity.

Phone/e-mail directory: I need to find somebody at WSU. Where do I look?

Look in the WSU Online Directory, Wayne State's electronic phone book. The directory has two main components:

*Students not wanting to be listed in the WSU Online Directory can have their listings removed by filling out a Release of Directory Information pdf file form.

Free or low cost software and support: Where can I get it?

C&IT provides WSU faculty with two places to obtain software and support for it:

Purchase a computer: Do you have suggestions on what to buy and where I can get a good deal?

For information regarding computer purchases, see our hardware page. It has links to recommendations for desktop and laptop computers along with other computer hardware. It also has suggestions on where you can get special prices.

Computers to use: Where can I find them on campus?

If you need to use a computer lab for your class, the first place to check is with your department. They may have a place you can use. For a comprehensive list of computer labs on and off campus, including information on who can use them, see Computer Labs at Wayne State.

Wireless connection: Where can I use my laptop to access the Internet?

Currently, the WSU Wireless network is available in several locations on the WSU main campus, including parts of the Student Center, Scott Hall, and the Welcome Center. See wireless@wayne for details.
