E-Mail Forwarding
WSU uses its enterprise communication system, Wayne Connect, as a primary means of communication between students, faculty, and staff. E-mail is a quick, cost-effective, and environmentally-aware communications medium, and its reliable operation is vital for the University to conduct business.
In the recent past, forwarding Wayne Connect e-mail has disrupted e-mail operations. Forwarding is an option for all Wayne Connect users; however, individuals choose to forward e-mail at their own risk.
C&IT does not recommend forwarding your Wayne Connect e-mail because:
- WSU has invested in a top-tier e-mail system where all WSU students, faculty, and staff get an account with ample storage space
- C&IT works diligently to resolve delivery problems with external e-mail providers, but these situations often take several days to be resolved
- It is impossible for C&IT to guarantee message delivery to external e-mail providers; these systems are outside C&IT’s control.
When C&IT becomes aware of delivery problems with external e-mail providers:
- C&IT will work with the external provider to resolve the issue
- C&IT will attempt to e-mail a notice to affected individuals (i.e., those that are forwarding to the external e-mail provider)
- C&IT will post information about the problem on the computing.wayne.edu website under News.
- C&IT will send a campus-wide e-mail notice only if a problem persists for 7+ days
If you must forward your WSU e-mail, be aware of these risks:
- Important e-mail originating from WSU may be delayed/not delivered to your forwarding address
- Bounceback notification policy is set by each external e-mail provider, not by C&IT. Thus senders might not receive a notice that their message was not delivered.
- You are still responsible for reading your WSU e-mail in a timely fashion.
How to set e-mail forwarding
If you do choose to use another e-mail address regularly (Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) and don't want to check multiple e-mail accounts, you can use the Wayne Connect E-mail forwarding feature to send your Wayne State e-mail there. Check out the WSU Knowledgebase article for more information.
