PC Clinic

The WSU Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) PC Clinic provides limited service on non-university desktop and laptop (notebook) computers. This is a fee-based carry-in repair service for computers that are NOT owned by Wayne State University. View our price list. This is a PDF file

Before you visit the PC Clinic, call the C&IT Help Desk at (313) 577-4778 and try to resolve your computer problem over the phone. If, after speaking with the Help Desk staff person, the problem cannot be resolved please read below for information regarding the PC Clinic.

Currently, the C&IT PC Clinic's work space is limited, so keep in mind these important details:

  • Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m & Thursday 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

  • Turnaround time is typically 3 to 5 business days. — If you need to use a computer while yours is being repaired, try one of the many that are available on the WSU campus.

Is the computer worth fixing?

What services are available?

Services are limited to computers that meet the minimum system requirements. Basic Services include:

  • Diagnostics
  • Security Tune-Up
  • Hardware upgrades and installations (memory, modem, network card, hard drives, etc.)
  • Data backup
  • Data recovery
  • Software installation

Services may be available for computers not meeting the minimum system requirements (listed at the bottom of this page). These services are performed at the discretion of the PC Clinic at the standard hourly rate. The PC Clinic cannot support non-WSU, such as AOL and Comcast.

Who can request this service?

The PC Clinic is exclusively for active Wayne State University students, faculty and staff on individual non-university owned (home) computers. WSU departments that have University computers in need of service should contact their local technical support staff.

Is there anything else I need to bring in addition to my computer?

When you come to the PC Clinic, bring either your power cord or laptop (notebook) power adapter and all appropriate software (operating system software and/or application software).

Important notice:

  • PC Clinic personnel will only install properly licensed software. You must provide the original discs, licenses, and product keys.
  • If a service agreement requires the installation of new software, such as an OS upgrade, either the PC Clinic or Software Clearinghouse personnel can provide assistance with ordering software at educational discounted prices. Call the Software Clearinghouse in advance to check the availability of specific software at (313) 577-4060.

How can I check the status of my computer?

When your PC is ready, an email notification will be sent. You will also be notified by phone by PC Clinic personnel to review the costs associated with the work performed; at which time you can make an online payment for service(s) performed and then pick-up your PC.

Depending on the number and type of requests in the queue, completion of services can take 3 to 5 business days. We can give you a more accurate timeframe once your computer is checked in at the PC Clinic. If you need your computer back by the next business day, an expedite service is available for a fee.

What forms of payment are accepted?

Students may pay with a credit card (VISA or MasterCard only) or a money order.

Faculty and Staff may pay with a credit card (VISA or MasterCard only), a money order, or check.

*Please note that cash is NOT accepted.


Minimum system requirements:

  • Windows: Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), and USB 2.0.
  • Macintosh: G4, 512MB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.
