SMARTi Troubleshooting Guide
Special note: This information is for access to Banner Reports
(using SMARTi COLD client software).
This troubleshooting guide is for technical support staff, local area network
(LAN) administrators, or the very experienced Windows user who is working with
SMARTi COLD.
Detailed instructions are available on Setting Up a Computer Running Windows
2000 Pro to Use SMARTi.
System Availability:
Before you troubleshoot for other problems, please check the online Administrative
Systems Availability Schedule to find out whether the Banner System databases
is currently online and available for use.
Hardware and Software Requirements:
If you are having problems accessing or running SMARTi (to access Banner Reports)
on a desktop computer, check the Administrative Computing
Desktop Standards.
Other Banner System access issues
- For SMARTi logon instructions, see Accessing SMARTi
at WSU.
- Banner System users will have problems installing the Banner and SMARTi
COLD client software if they do not have access to modify the Windows registry
on their computers. In that case, you will have to either give your users
access to modify the Windows registry, or you will have to install the Banner
and SMARTi COLD clients for them.
- If you think that the machine that houses the Wsuadmin share is down, ping
the following host:
— smb1.wayne.edu (141.217.1.143)
If you cannot connect to this machine, contact the C&IT Network Operations
Center at 577-4746.
- Banner System users authenticate to the Wsuadmin share using their WSU AccessID
and password, which is the LDAP password used for mail and Pipeline.
Employees who don't turn off their computers at night will find that, when
they get in the next day, the mapped drive icon to Wsuadmin will still be
displayed, but it will no longer provide access to Banner or Banner Reports
(SMARTi COLD). The only solution is to restart the computer. Remapping the
drive will not suffice.
- If Banner users are having problems installing or running the Banner System
or related components, and they have Novell's 32-bit NetWare client installed
on their machine, upgrade their NetWare client. You can obtain the latest
versions from the Novell
Software Downloads Web site. (As of September 29, 1999, the latest versions
are v3.1 for Windows 95/98 and v4.6 for Windows NT.)
- If you get the error message — The account is not authorized
to log in from this station
This message only appears on a Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro workstation that
does not have the
enableplaintextpassword registry key set to 1. By default the registry key
is set to 0. The key is found (in both Windows 2000 and XP) at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters
After you change the value of the registry key from 0 to 1, you MUST restart
the computer to put the change into effect.
Complete instructions for changing the registry key are in step 1C of
the instructions for Windows 2000
or XP Pro Setup for SMARTi Access.
