Using SMARTi with Banner

Are you using SMARTi with Banner?

If you answered yes, this installation information is for you. Note the following special instructions that are described in detail in Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 below:

Step 1: Set up the system configuration, map a network drive, and install the old Banner client software

  1. Caution: If you have a local Oracle client installed on the computer, do not continue with this installation. Contact your local computer support person for help.
  2. Use the instructions for Windows 2000 or XP Pro Setup for SMARTi Access.
  3. If the computer is already set up with JInitiator for Banner access, you will be prompted to replace the Oracle registry key, you must answer YES for SMARTi to work properly.

Step 2: Install SMARTi

Use the following to install or upgrade SMARTi and BAR:

Step 3: Install the JInitiator

Download and install JInitiator; it is needed for Banner. Note: You MUST install the JInitiator NOW even if you had installed it before because the JInitiator registry key was deleted when you answered YES to replace the Oracle registry key in Step 1, number 3.

Technical information

The Banner client adds a line to the computer's autoexec.bat file, which then adds a pointer to the path so it can find the files it needs on the wsuadmin share. The Banner client also creates an Oracle registry key with the information required to find the Banner and SMARTi Oracle databases. If you have already installed JInitiator, when you install the Banner client, it will detect an Oracle registry key (installed by JInitiator) and ask if you want to replace it. You must answer yes for SMARTi to work. You then must reinstall JInitiator to add its registry information back, so you can access Banner.
