Desk staff. All packages are supported by the C&IT Help Desk except
where noted.
Buying hardware and software
- Software Clearinghouse
- http://clearinghouse.wayne.edu
Students: This is where you go to purchase discounted Microsoft software
for your computers at home. Check it out - you'll be surprised at the prices!
Employees: Please explore this site for more information about your access
to software on-, and in some cases off-, campus.
- What Computer Should I Buy?
See this page for C&IT's suggestions for purchasing computers, both
for campus and home.
Downloads
- QuickTime
- http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Apple's media player. It handles many different audio and visual file
formats, both in the forms of streaming and downloads. QuickTime is available
for both Macintosh and Windows.
- RealPlayer
- http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html
Real's media player. Like QuickTime (above), it too handles many different
audio and visual file formats, although RealPlayer primarily is used for
streaming. RealPlayer is available for Macintosh, Windows and other operating
systems. Be sure to download the free player, not the "trial" version
of the paid player.
- Safari
- http://www.apple.com/safari/
Apple's browser for Mac OS X users. The C&IT Help Desk supports and
strongly suggests this for Mac OS X users.
Computing Security Resources
- C&IT Safe Computing Principles
- http://computing.wayne.edu/safecomputing
This is our guide to ways you can stay safe online.
- SpamCop
- http://spamcop.net/
In this day and age, who isn't receiving Spam e-mail? SpamCop is an invaluable
resource to many at the C&IT Help Desk for their spam reporting needs. This
service is not supported by the C&IT Help Desk.
- Symantec Security Response
- http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
This is an excellent Internet resource. Symantec keeps a library of various
virus descriptions and, most helpfully, also has a library of joke and
hoax viruses. You can also manually download updates to your Symantec
AntiVirus here.
Search Engines
- Google
- http://www.google.com
This is the search engine used the most often by C&IT Help Desk staff,
and it is the one we always suggest to Help Desk customers. This
service is not supported by the C&IT Help Desk.
External Support
- Apple Support
- http://www.apple.com/support/
The C&IT Help Desk supports many Apple products, but there are some
things (i.e., AppleWorks) that we do not support. This is an excellent
resource for us to point people towards.
- Microsoft Support
- http://support.microsoft.com/
While we support many of the Microsoft products we do find this a useful
tool to point people towards with products we don't support (i.e., MS
Publisher).
- Support for Portable Devices
- At the current time, the C&IT Help Desk
does not support any portable devices. However, we are
aware of the proliferation of BlackBerry, Palm OS, Pocket PC, and
Symbian OS handhelds and phones on the WSU campus. The links below
will help you find support for:
